When I was invited to select timber from The Royal Botanic Gardens for the exhibition I was delighted to be able to select some Sugi (Japanese cedar)which the Japanese have traditionally used for charring. The soft wood is removed in the process resulting in a textured finish along the grain.
Having worked with Isao on another project I invited him to collaborate in the designing and making a piece for the exhibition. Isao prepared the original Japanese inspired design which was subsequently modified as we developed our relationship with the material.

It had been intended to burn the entire surface but the timber for the top had far too many knots which presented an obstacle to filling and burning. As a result we came up with the design that highlighted the natural colour of Sugi on the tabletop surface contrasting the burnt structure.
